How the system works
Cluj county doctors in figures: how many there are and where
Last updated: 4 July 2026
The public register of the Cluj College of Physicians comprises 5,832 doctors, distributed across 104 specialties and 951 medical institutions, in 104 localities of the county. It is the clearest numerical picture of Cluj’s medical corps: who they are, what grades they hold and, above all, how geographically concentrated they are. In short: almost two in three doctors practise in the city of Cluj-Napoca.
How many doctors are in Cluj county
The reference figure is 5,832 doctors. Each is counted only once, regardless of how many practices or hospitals have them on their staff. They cover:
- 104 distinct medical specialties;
- 951 medical institutions — hospitals, polyclinics, practices and places of work;
- 104 localities in the county, from the city down to small communes.
The difference between the number of doctors (5,832) and the number of institutions (951) shows that the system is made up of many small places of work alongside a few large hospital centres that gather hundreds of doctors.
How they split by professional grade
Professional grade says a lot about a doctor’s experience and autonomy. The register splits them as follows:
| Professional grade | Number of doctors | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Senior (primar) doctors | 2,471 | 42.4% |
| Specialist doctors | 2,343 | 40.2% |
| Resident doctors | 959 | 16.4% |
| No grade specified | 59 | 1.0% |
| Total | 5,832 | 100% |
A few observations that follow directly from the figures:
- Senior (primar) doctors — the highest tier, which requires seniority and a promotion exam — form the largest group, with 2,471 people.
- Together, senior and specialist doctors add up to 4,814, the vast majority of Cluj’s medical corps.
- The 959 residents represent the generation in training. Their substantial presence reflects Cluj’s role as a medical university centre.
- The 59 doctors without a grade specified are cases where the register does not contain the information; it does not necessarily mean the absence of a grade.
The concentration in Cluj-Napoca
Here lies the most important story in the data. 3,706 doctors, that is 63.5% of the total, practise in the city of Cluj-Napoca. The remaining 2,126 are spread across all the other localities of the county.
The imbalance becomes even clearer when we look at how many localities have practical access to a doctor:
- 85 of 104 localities have at most 2 doctors registered with a place of work there;
- only a few towns and large communes gather tens or hundreds of doctors;
- the county-seat city alone concentrates almost two thirds of the entire medical corps.
In other words, Cluj’s medical map is not uniform: it is a dense centre, Cluj-Napoca, surrounded by a periphery where the medical presence thins out rapidly. You can see this distribution on the map of doctors.
What these figures actually tell us
The numbers describe a system typical of a county with a major university and hospital hub:
- High density in the centre. Cluj-Napoca acts as a regional hub, with university hospitals that attract specialists and residents.
- A mature medical corps. The fact that over 42% are senior (primar) doctors shows a professional corps with experience, not one dominated by newcomers.
- A reserve for the future. The 959 residents are the doctors of tomorrow; some of them will stay to practise in the county.
- Unequal geographic access. The 63.5% concentration in a single city raises legitimate questions about access for residents of the rest of the county.
These figures do not say how busy a practice is or how long you wait for an appointment — for that, data on patients and waiting lists would be needed. They do, however, clearly say how many doctors exist and where they are registered, which is the starting point of any discussion about access to health care in Cluj.

Methodology and sources
The data come from the public register of the Cluj College of Physicians (Colegiul Medicilor Cluj, membrii.colmedcj.ro), in the form available on 3 July 2026. The figures represent a snapshot of the moment and may change as the register is updated.
An important calculation note: a doctor who practises at several institutions is counted only once. That is why the total number of doctors (5,832) is smaller than the number of place-of-work institutions (951) added to the multiple presences. Professional grades, specialties and location are taken as such from the register, without corrections to any errors at the source. The material is for informational and statistical purposes and does not constitute medical advice.
